ALLEN PARK, Mich. (WXYZ) - Aaron Berry called his choice of words "outrageous." Now he hopes time will help his cause.
As the Lions cleaned out their lockers Monday, the cornerback expressed regret for a tweet he sent after the Lions loss to New Orleans Saturday night.
After dropping a would-be interception in the game, and leading a defensive secondary that was torched by Drew Brees, Berry was targeted by fans on Twitter.
His response read:
"Y'all can go back to being Broke & Miserable…now back to regular scheduled programming…"
Monday, he owned up to his brutally uncalled for message.
"I apologize to any fans that took it the wrong way," Berry said. "I have to do a better job of controlling my emotions."
Lions coach Jim Schwartz said he was aware of the issue and joked about his own Twitter account.
"That's why I'm a one-way Twitter guy. I only send 'em in. Don't get 'em in," Schwartz smirked.
Berry said older players on the team that mentor him--and some of the coaches--helped him understand his mistake.
"Even to bring it up, the words I used, it's just off topic. I apologize," Berry reiterated.
The second year corner deleted the tweet and the follow-up apology from Saturday. But the damage was done. He says he hopes the fans can move on in good time.
