ALLEN PARK (WXYZ) -
Before the Lions practiced with their pads for the first time at training camp on Tuesday, July 31, general manager Martin Mayhew talked about how he's "a little bit surprised" and "disappointed" that Jahvid Best is still on the physically unable to perform list.

"I think right now it's very early in the game to make that kind of a call," said Mayhew when asked for a specific timetable when Best will get cleared.

"It's up to the medical professionals to decide when he's going to be available. Eventually he will get cleared. I'm very positive. I feel very comfortable saying that."

Mayhew shared his thoughts on the length of time it's taking Best to return.

"A little bit surprised, a little bit disappointed," Mayhew said. "Everything was trending toward him being ready to go the first day of training camp. It didn't happen that way, so you have to kind of adjust. We have adjusted our expectation on that."

Best has not been cleared for contact since he suffered a concussion nearly 10 months ago playing against San Francisco.

"Like I said, the medical professionals have to determine what makes him cleared, and what makes him cleared and what makes him eligible to play," said Mayhew. "That's not my call. I really don't understand the science of it, but I'm waiting to get good news from those guys."
