Schwartz says Lions safety Louis Delmas is 'day-to-day' and sore

ALLEN PARK, Mich. (WXYZ) - The Lions may have picked up a 28-24 win over the Seahawks on Sunday, but Detroit head coach Jim Schwartz was fielding more questions about his banged up secondary than the victory today.

Lions starting safety Louis Delmas injured his left knee, which was surgically repaired in August, and left in the third quarter. 

"He had some tests today," said Schwartz. "You know, he’s day-to-day, he’s sore. I don’t know if I can classify it as a re-injury, but it’s his sore knee that’s been bothering him through training camp and the season. You know, he’s a hard-worker, tough guy. We’ll try to work through it.

"I think certainly our secondary’s been a patch work this year. From the very beginning not having Delmas and [Chris] Houston early and having a lot of different faces and bringing guys back and plugging them in and stuff like that, but again, the object’s to win, not to get a gold start for performance or for effort or for, you know, dealing with injuries or anything else."

Schwartz credited Joique Bell, who attended Wayne State University in Detroit, for setting up the winning touchdown from just outside the goal line on third down.

"Joique Bell had a huge play. I mean, that’s third down and ten in the red zone. Not a lot of air in that defense there and he’s able to take a short pass and get the first down, almost get the touchdown," said Schwartz.

"That was a huge play in the game because, you know, if they could’ve held us there we would have been kicking a field goal and there still would have been a lot more time on the clock for them to come back." 

As for Delmas, there is still no word on whether he will be able to play the Jaguars in Jacksonville, Fla., on Sunday, Nov. 4 at 1 p.m.
