(WXYZ) - The Red Wings blue line took another hit on Saturday as the injury bug claimed defenseman Brendan Smith.
Smith, a top-four defensemen for the Wings, injured his shoulder during the Red Wings 4-2 defeat to the Blue Jackets on Saturday and isn’t expected back for 10-14 days.
The injury to Smith is the latest in a series of injuries that have marred the Wings in the early beginnings of their lockout shortened season. Only eight games into the season, over half of the Wings defensemen have experienced an injury of some sort.
Jakub Kindl was absent for the first three games of the season with a pulled groin. Carlo Colaiacovo hurt his shoulder in the second game of the season and still hasn’t seen the ice again. He is not expected to return to the lineup for a couple more weeks. Jonathan Ericsson also injured a shoulder this season and has missed three games as a result of the injury. Ian White took a skate to the leg against Dallas on Jan. 22nd and has yet to return to the ice.
The Wings next game is against Calgary on Tuesday. Brian Lashoff or, if available to play, Ian White could see time in Smith’s absence.
