DETROIT (AP) - Justin Abdelkader has been suspended two games for his hit on Ducks defenseman Toni Lydman late in the second period of Game Three.
Abdelkader came with a lot of speed and hit Lydman shoulder-to-shoulder; Abdelkader left his feet on impact, which isn’t unusual at such a high pace, but the NHL doesn’t like it when players do that.
It looked like a clean hit so much so that neither referee made a call at first, not until getting input from the linesmen. Abdelkader ended up with five minutes for charging and a game misconduct, triggering a review by NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan, who some might remember used to play for the Wings.
Abdelkader will not be available when the Wings host the Ducks Monday in Game 4, a pivotal games in their hopes to get back in this series.
The Red Wings have bigger problems than even Abdelkader being suspended. Sure, the Ducks converted during Abdelkader’s charging penalty, but that only made it 1-0. The Wings had the entire third period to tie it up, instead they gave up a shorthanded goal to make it 2-0 for Anaheim, and never recovered.
