MADISON HEIGHTS (WXYZ) - After a magical 11-0 run to get to the state quarterfinals, Detroit Loyola's season came to an end Saturday in the Meijer Game of the Week. Hudson shutout the Bulldogs, 35-0.
Loyola took a 3-25 record in its past four seasons into the 2011 campaign. With just 28 players on its roster, the Bulldogs took control of their Catholic League division and had their first perfect regular season in the school's 19-year history.
They ran into a steady Hudson team Saturday that pouned the ball down the field with short gains all afternoon. After a scoreless first quarter, Lucas Sparapani scored from 15 yards out to put Hudson ahead 7-0 in the second quarter.
Turnovers were a problem for Loyola. Every time it seemed the Bulldogs were inching towards cutting into Hudson's lead, they shot themselves in the foot.
Hudson capitalized on a Bulldogs fumble late in the first half and Sparapani scored again to make it 14-0 at halftime.
The second half was much of the same story, as James Herron capped Hudson's first drive with a touchdown from the 6-yard line to put his team ahead 21-0.
Herron added another TD and Joel Varney added the Tigers final score, to give Hudson their fourth consecutive regional championship.
The game was played at Madison Heights Bishop Foley.
OTHER SCORES:
Brother Rice beat Southfield, 16-6 to set up a Week 1 rematch with Detroit Martin Luther King in the semifinals. Catholic Central beat Ann Arbor Pioneer, 21-0 to advance to face Rockford.
