LIVONIA, Mich. - Bobby Naubert is an undersized, 5'10" guard with a lot of talent, a lot of hunger, and a lot to prove.
That's a description that could be used for the entire Madonna basketball team before this season.
This season? They have nothing to prove. For the first time in the school's history, the Crusaders won the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) championship.
Ask Naubert about the difference between today and the day he entered Madonna three years ago, and his answer is easy.
"Oh man, it's night and day. The season before I got here they won eight games. My freshman year, we won seven. We wanted to change the culture since Day One," he explains.
The hard work has paid off. Naubert was named the WHAC Player of the Year after leading Madonna in scoring this season. He averaged 16.7 points and became the school's all-time leader in assists.
"Definitely tough times, but without them, I don't think we'd be here today."
Fourth-year coach Noel Emenhiser played at Madonna, and has taken the program to heights he shot for as a player.
"When I had the opportunity to take over as coach, I wanted to help put Madonna basketball on the map. I believed we had the tools to do it," he recalls.
Now they've made history together, putting the numbers "2-0-1-3" on an empty banner that sits in the middle of their gym's wall.
And in the meantime, they were reminded everyday of their feat by clicking on their official basketball website. MadonnaCrusaders.com featured a team photo you have to click through for the entire week following the title.
"It's the greatest feeling in the world, clicking on that website," Naubert says.
"It gives you an option to skip this add permanently, and I haven't taken that option yet. Every time I click on the website I want to see that picture and remember what that moment was like," Emenhiser says.
And for as long as the gym walls stand, the banner will be a reminder, too.
