ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Michigan football coach Brady Hoke says one of his players will wear former President Gerald Ford's No. 48 this season.
He made the announcement Tuesday on Birmingham, Ala., radio station WJOX after a caller asked him about whether someone would wear the No. 1 jersey.
Hoke says Ford will be celebrated just as Desmond Howard was as the first "Michigan Football Legend" last year. Receiver Junior Hemingway wore a patch on his No. 21 jersey last season, honoring Howard, and Roy Roundtree will wear it this year.
Ford's No. 48 is one of five jerseys that were been retired by college football's winningest program. It was put out of circulation in 1994.
He was Michigan's MVP during his three-year playing career from 1932-34 and became president in 1974.
