Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood suffered another setback in his recovery from sports hernia surgery and was placed on long-term injured reserve.
Osgood realized during today's practice that he would be unable to play anytime soon and Red Wings general manager Ken Holland was forced to make the move. Osgood won't be eligible to play in an NHL game until April 8, when Detroit faces Chicago.
This turn of events was the latest in a series of interesting moves including Red Wings goaltenders.
Yesterday, Joey MacDonald was sent to Grand Rapids to make room for Jan Mursak, who was needed at forward to fill in with the Red Wings besieged by injuries to Todd Bertuzzi, Pavel Datsyuk, Johan Franzen and Jiri Hudler.
While the Red Wings hoped Osgood could back-up Jimmy Howard tonight when the team faces Vancouver, they took the step of signing Tony Passingham from Sarnia in the Ontario Hockey League to a one-day contract. Passingham was at practice today.
After placing Osgood on the IR, Red Wings management decided to recall MacDonald from Grand Rapids, less than 24 hours after he was sent down. MacDonald is expected back in Detroit by gametime and will back-up Howard tonight and for the foreseeable future with Osgood unavailable.
