The NHL unveiled the 2012-13 regular season schedule today, and the Red Wings will be challenged in many ways throughout the year.
The Wings open the season at home on Friday, October 12 against the Predators and will host all five of the other Original Six teams.
The Boston Bruins visit Joe Louis Arena on December 10. The Toronto Maple Leafs will face the Red Wings in the NHL Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium on January 1. The Montreal Canadiens come to town on January 30 and the New York Rangers are here on March 20.
Because of the Wings inclusion in the NHL Winter Classic, there will not be a traditional New Year's Eve game at Joe Louis Arena.
The first month of the season will be particularly challenging, as Detroit plays six of its first nine games on the road. The home dates are against Nashville, Vancouver and San Jose.
November offers a chance for the Wings to settle in at home - between November 6 and November 21, Detroit will play seven of eight games at Joe Louis, including games against Edmonton, Calgary, Minnesota, Dallas, New Jersey, Pittsburgh and St. Louis.
From November 6 through December 22, 17 out of 21 games will be played at Joe Louis Arena.
January will send the Red Wings to the west coast for the first time, where they'll face Chicago, San Jose, Los Angeles, Anaheim and Phoenix over a 10-day stretch from January 6-15.
The second west coast trip will be in late February and the third in mid-March.
The regular season ends with six games scheduled between April 2 and April 13, three on the road and three at home.
