Spartans Nix caught with marijuana, suspended from team

EAST LANSING, Mich. (WXYZ) -

Michigan State forward Derrick Nix was arrested Monday night in East Lansing.

The junior was stopped by police and charged with operating a vehicle with presence of drugs. Nix was also charged with marijuana possession.

Tom Izzo released the following statement Tuesday:

“Based on the information we have received, Derrick Nix has been suspended indefinitely from our basketball team, and his future with our program is uncertain. He made an irresponsible decision that has put his future with our program in serious jeopardy.”

According to reports, Nix spent the night in jail.

Nix averaged 8.1 points, 3.8 rebounds and 18.9 minutes a game during the 2011-12 season.

He scored a career-high 18 points against LIU-Brooklyn in the team's second round game of the NCAA Tournament.
