TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - No. 19 Michigan has been invited to represent the Big Ten in the Outback Bowl, where they'll tackle the South Carolina Gamecocks in Tampa, Fla.

The game is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Jan. 1, 2013 at Raymond James Stadium.

Outback Bowl chairman Mike Kerrigan says the Wolverines (8-4) are an exciting team with "exceptional talent." The New Year's Day game gets the third pick of participants from the Big Ten and SEC.

Coach Brady Hoke's team went 6-2 in the Big Ten, losing on the road to Nebraska and Ohio State. Michigan's other losses came to the teams that'll play for the national title — top-ranked Notre Dame and No. 2 Alabama.

This will be Steve Spurrier's first career meeting against Michigan.

South Carolina defeated the Wolverines 17-14 in Ann Arbor, Mich., on Sept. 27, 1980 with Michigan defeating the Gamecocks 34-3 on Sept. 21, 1985.
