LIVONIA, Mich. (WXYZ) - Michigan based Vardar South is known as one of the best and most prestigious premier youth soccer clubs in the Midwest. The kids have been invited to play in a major soccer tournament in Spain that kicks off on Thursday, March 28.
Dennis Brose, who's director of coaching for the Vardar South soccer club, is no stranger to top level competition.
The former Detroit Rockers professional soccer standout is using his experience to teach players what it takes to become the best.
"That's why we're going on the trip," said Brose. "We want to be able to use that as a bench mark so the kids can come back and maybe be a little bit more motivated to put a little bit more work into it."
Vardar South is setting its sights on competing against players overseas that could possibly play Champions League soccer in the next few years.
"It's really cool because I never really thought I was going to [get an opportunity] to meet those players," said Chris Campbell, a Windsor, Ontario, native and member of the U-13 Vardar South team.
"In the future they might be on that team," said Campbell.
"They have such good control of the ball," said Tanner Brose, who's on the U-13 Vardar South team. "They can keep possession [throughout the match] so it's going to be a hard challenge to go up against them."
"We have good team chemistry and we've played together for awhile now so I think we'll be pretty good together," said Hunter Wander, who's the goalkeeper for U-13 Vardar South.
"We're probably going to face kids for the most part that are half a year older than our U-11s," said Dennis Brose. "And then the same goes for the [U] 13s, so it'll be a pretty monumental task."
Dennis Brose admits that the odds are not stacked in Vardar South's favor in terms of experience and training, but that's not stopping the players from losing their confidence.
"I think we are the best in the state; maybe one of the best in the Midwest," said Tanner Brose.
"We got new jerseys from Nike so they were very nice and kind to provide us those. We had them customized for the boys just so they have something; kind of a little piece of memorabilia to take home," said Dennis Brose.
