(WXYZ) Detroit - Police are investigating a tragic chain reaction crash on I-94 at Mt Elliott.
It all began when a man driving a Kia Sedona lost control on the black ice covered road early Saturday morning. He hit the median.
His van was disabled at that point, and he was stranded in the middle of the interstate.
Passersby stopped to help, and then an off-duty Detroit Police Department Sergeant stopped to help.
They could do nothing as a horrifying chain of events unfolded before their eyes.
Michigan State Police say as the van driver tried to cross the road, another driver approaching at highway speeds swerved to miss the disabled van. That driver then lost control, slammed into the driver killing him, and hit one of the cars that had stopped to help.
The off-duty police sergeant suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
