Detroit (WXYZ) - A truck driver for NPO Transportation was driving on I-94 Westbound around 6 this morning when Michigan State Police say it is believed he fell asleep at the wheel. He was apparently startled awake by the sound of his semi sideswiping a Ford Escape.
The truck then careened out of control into the median of the expressway near the Livernois exit in Detroit. The impact tore apart the truck. The cab flew over the median onto the eastbound side of I-94. The trailer and powertrain of the truck came to a stop under a railroad bridge before exploding.
The scene forced the closure of westbound I-94 at Livernois, and several lane closures eastbound.
Flames shot up around the railroad bridge. Rescue workers responded to the drivers involved. They were shocked to learn there were no serious injuries. The truck driver was taken to Henry Ford Hospital where he was treated for a fractured lower leg or ankle.
Michigan State Police are investigating the crash.
