WHITE LAKE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - The National Weather Service office serving southeastern Michigan is holding an open house to mark its 20th anniversary in Oakland County's White Lake Township.

The weather service says visitors to the Wednesday afternoon open house will be able learn about forecasting, warning operations and data collection. Staff will launch weather balloons hourly and demonstrate how weather instruments work.

The Detroit-area weather office provides services to nearly six million people in 17 counties, and provides marine weather services for lakes Huron and St. Clair.

Southeast Michigan weather records date back to 1779 and permanent observations were established in 1849.
