Local communities open cooling centers to help beat the heat

(WXYZ) - A number of local communities have opened cooling centers for residents looking to beat the heat.

In Livonia the Community Recreation Center is open from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on weekdays, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays and 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. The center is located at 15100 Hubbard, at the corner of Five Mile Road.

Residents who need to use the shelter overnight should arrive before 8:00 p.m. on weekdays, 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. However, they should call ahead of time so that staffing can be arranged. Those who need the help are asked to call the Recreation Center (734) 466-2900 or the Mayor's Office at (734) 466-220 during weekday business hours.

The City of Westland has also opened it's cooling centers for both Tuesday and Wednesday and operations may be extended if the heat continues past that point.

The cooling centers are located at:

• William P. Faust Public Library – 6123 Central City Parkway – 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
• Dorsey Center – 32715 Dorsey – 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
• Friendship Center – 1119 N. Newburgh – 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The City of Detroit has also opened their cooling centers: 

• Crowell Recreation Center at 16630 Lahser. This week from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Beginning June 25 Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• Coleman A. Young Recreation Cetner on Robert Bradby Drive. This week from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Beginning June 25 Monday to Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
• Farwell Recreation Center on East Outer Drive. This week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Beginning June 25 Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• Patton Recreation Center on Woodmere. This week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Beginning June 25 Monday to Friday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
