(WXYZ) - A number of local communities have opened cooling centers for residents looking to beat the heat.
In Livonia the Community Recreation Center is open from 5:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on weekdays, 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays and 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sundays. The center is located at 15100 Hubbard, at the corner of Five Mile Road.
Residents who need to use the shelter overnight should arrive before 8:00 p.m. on weekdays, 4:00 p.m. on Saturdays and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. However, they should call ahead of time so that staffing can be arranged. Those who need the help are asked to call the Recreation Center (734) 466-2900 or the Mayor's Office at (734) 466-220 during weekday business hours.
The City of Westland has also opened it's cooling centers for both Tuesday and Wednesday and operations may be extended if the heat continues past that point.
