Hamtramck Labor Day Festival runs this weekend

(WXYZ) - After almost ceasing to exist because of financial problems, organizers say a citizen effort has made the annual Hamtramck Labor Day Festival better then ever.

"It almost didn't happen, but Hamtramck is a proud community of fighters, and thanks to a group of devoted volunteers and community leaders, we expect one of our finest festivals ever," says committee chair Konrad Maziarz in a news release.

The Festival will run noon to 10:00 p.m. from Saturday, September 1 through Monday, September 3.

Admission is free and secure parking is available at Joseph Campau between Mitchell and McDougal Streets.

The Detroit Bus Company will also provide free transportation between Royal Oak and Ferndale and the festival on Sunday and Monday. Pickup locations are at Gusoline Alley, Imperial and Danny's Pub. Pick up times are 1:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m, 6:00 p.m., 8:00 p.m. The shuttle will return to Royal Oak and Ferndale at 10:00 p.m., departing from the north end of the festival.

The Hamtramck Labor Day Festival features a carnival with more than 100 rides and games, more than 40 vendors providing ethnic cuisine, arts and crafts and two stages providing entertainment throughout the festival.
