The King & I, directed by John Whatley, is based on the novel Anna and the King of Siam, by Margaret Landon, which in turn was based on the memoirs of Anna Leonowens, a British Governess played by Amy Bishop Pinsonneault.
She comes to Siam to teach the King's children in the 1860's. The King brings her there as part of his plan to modernize the country, but she ends up teaching him valuable lessons about life. Their Relationship is slightly rocky, yet defined by a hidden love that neither character can admit.
The musical premiered on Broadway in 1951 and made Yul Brynner and instant hit. The show went on to win Tony Awards for best Musical, Actress (Gertrude Lawrence) and Featured Actor (Yul Brynner).
Music Director Sue BellePerche leads the Orchestra through a phenomenal score including hit songs like Shall We Dance, We Kiss in A Shadow, Western People Funny and A Puzzlement.
Also, Choreographer, John Luther has created a mesmerizing Ballet as well as a magnificent version of the popular tune, Shall We Dance.
