BBC reveals Scottish actor Peter Capaldi will take over the role of Dr. Who from Matt Smith

(WXYZ) - The BBC has named Scottish actor Peter Capaldi as the next star of Dr. Who.

The announcement was made during a live special broadcast in the United States on BBC America.

The 55-year-old Capaldi will be the 12th Doctor in the shows 50 year history. He will take over for the current Doctor, Matt Smith, who announced he was leaving the role earlier this year.

Smith has been in Detroit recently, filming the Ryan Gosling movie How to Catch a Monster.

Capaldi appeared in this year's Brad Pitt blockbuster World War Z. He is no stranger to the Dr. Who having appeared on the show in 2008. He also appeared in the spin off series Torchwood.

Smith will appear in shows upcoming 50th anniversary special. He will then turn the role over to Capaldi when Dr. Who regenerates during the show's annual Christmas special at the end of the year.
