(WXYZ) - The Michigan Film Office says the Transformers are returning to metro Detroit.
The office announced today that Transformers 4 had been approved for $20 million in state film incentives. The movie is expected to spend almost $82 million in the state and create 368 jobs when it begins filming here later this year.
"It speaks volumes about all Michigan has to offer that Transformers is returning once again to our state," director of the Michigan Film Office Margaret O'Riley said in a news release. "This project will shine another bright spotlight on Michigan and provide tremendous opportunities for our cast, crew and support services."
Both the first and third Transformers movies filmed in our state. Transformers was released in 2007. Transformers: Dark of the Moon was released in 2011.
The news release announcing the tax incentives for Transformers 4 is also giving a glimpse at the plot of the movie. It says that, following the battle in Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the Transformers have all but vanished from the face of the planet.
However, scientists and businessman are attempting to learn from humanity's past experience with the alien robots to push the boundaries of technology - all the while an ancient "Transformer menace sets Earth in his cross hairs."
Transformers 4 will be directed by Michael Bay, who directed the three previous Transformers movies. It will star series newcomer Mark Wahlberg.
Transformers 4 is scheduled to be released June 27, 2014.
