(WXYZ) - Police in Sweden have confirmed to the Associated Press that the director of the Oscar winning documentary Searching for Sugar Man has died.
Malik Bendjelloul was 36-years-old. He died late Tuesday. Police did not specify a cause of death, but say no criminal activity is suspected.
Searching for Sugar Man told the story of Detroit based musician Sixto Rodriguez. The singer was incredibly popular in South Africa, but had little fame outside of that country.
The movie follows two of Rodriguez's South African fans who were searching for the singer after hearing a rumor that he had died.
The film won numerous awards following its release, including the Oscar for Best Documentary.
Sixto Rodriguez has not yet commented on Bendjelloul's death. He is due to play a concert tonight at the Masonic Temple theater in Detroit.
