About ankle exotosis

Ankle exotosis (ex-oh-TOE-sis) is something you're most likely to read about in the sports pages,. It results from engaging in a sport that requires pushing off from a position with the foot extended forward. It is especially likely to occur after a previous ankle injury. Exotosis involves excessive bone growth at the site of the injury. It may begin as a small lump and grow over time. An athlete with this condition may be unable to run, cut or jump at full speed. As with many things, prevention is the best policy. Strengthening exercises will prevent many injuries in the first place, as will proper taping of the ankle prior to engaging in sports. Once you sustain an ankle injury, allow time for complete healing before engaging in the sport again. 'Playing with pain' may be laudable in the N-F-L, but it's not a good plan for avoiding complications. Most cases will clear up with sufficient rest. In severe instances, surgery may be needed to remove the excess bone. For more information, contact a foot and ankle specialist in your area.
