What does fair housing mean?

Fair Housing is a policy that has been established by the federal government to make it illegal to discriminate against a person's race, religion, age, sex, marital status, ethnicity or disability when making a decision about their application for tenancy. The Fair Housing Act embodies most of these statutes though some civil rights laws also cover housing issues. These laws make it illegal to discriminate in any part of the housing process from registering with a realtor to securing financing from a banking institution. These laws apply for both buying and renting property and are regulated by the federal Department of Housing And Urban Development. Anyone who feels they have been discriminated against or denied fair housing may file a complaint with the Secretary of Housing And Urban Development within one year of the incident. For more information about specific principles of fair housing, contact a real estate lawyer in your area.
