Length of lawsuits

Litigation is the process by which one party takes legal action against another whom he or she contends is liable for some type of damage. This process is time consuming and may last for a number of years before a resolution is obtained either by way of judgment at trial or settlement among the parties. Some jurisdictions have undertaken measures to assist with earlier settlement by requiring the parties to participate in a settlement conference sometimes referred to as non-binding arbitration. Many states have adopted procedures for resolving disputes alternative to formal trial. The most common alternative dispute resolution procedures are known as mediation and arbitration. These procedures are not mandatory but rather offer a less expensive and time consuming alternative to trial. An attorney experienced in litigation should be willing and able to advise you as to the most advantageous course for your claim.
