Firearms

Hunting with a firearm can be challenging, exciting, and rewarding if you are properly prepared. Several types of firearms are used in hunting, including rifles, shotguns, handguns, and muzzleloader rifles. Rifles are used with small game such as squirrels and rabbits and most big game including deer. Shotguns are primarily used for birds and waterfowl such as ducks, geese, dove, and quail, but can also be used for rabbits, squirrel, and fox. Shotgun shells contain different sized pellets depending on the type of animal. Handguns, while less accurate than rifles, are popular with some hunters. Muzzleloaders or black powder rifles are old fashioned rifles in which the ammunition and gunpowder must be packed down the barrel before each shot. Used by the early pioneers, muzzleloaders are popular with many hunting enthusiasts, especially for hunting deer. To be an effective hunter, you should be properly trained. A good place to start is a firearm or hunter education course. Practice with your firearm before the season opens. Also, make sure your gun is properly cleaned and in good working order before every hunt. States, counties, and local areas have regulations concerning hunting seasons, limits, and firearms. Be sure you have the proper licenses and permits before you head out. Regulations protect your rights as a hunter and ensure safe and fair hunting for all. For more information on hunting with firearms, contact a sporting goods or hunting store in your area.
