Barking

Barking dogs are often a nuisance and can cause problems for both owners and neighbors. To correct excessive barking, first try training to change this pattern of behavior. Attempt to stop the barking using a stern, commanding voice. Yelling is not helpful, as it often excites the dog and worsens the problem. Reward good behavior with praise or treats. If your dog is barking at distractions outside, such as passing cars or joggers, attempt to obstruct its view by placing the dog in a different part of the yard or by getting an opaque fence. If you are unable to control your dog's barking, consider the help of a professional trainer. This is often an effective choice for people who do not have the time to train their own dogs. For more information, contact your veterinarian or animal care specialist.
