STUDY: Cleaning pacifiers with spit is OK

(WXYZ) - You've probably seen someone do this, or maybe done it yourself. A baby's pacifier falls on the ground, the baby's mom picks it up, puts it in her mouth, then gives it back to the baby.

Turns out, this may be a healthy way to clean it off.

According to a study published in the journal Pediatrics, cleaning your baby's pacifier with your saliva could boost your child's immune system or prevent him or her from developing certain allergies. Children whose parents did this were also less likely to develop eczema.

Researchers studied 180 Swedish children and their parents.

The study found children whose parents had put the dirty pacifiers in their mouths first had one-third the risk of developing eczema compared to children whose parents had rinsed the pacifiers with water.
