Great American Smokeout: Will you kick the habit for good?

(WXYZ) - If you've been thinking about kicking your smoking habit, today's your day!

The American Cancer Society is urging smokers to give up cigarettes today as it marks the Great American Smokeout.

Even if you don't plan on quitting today, the organization hopes you'll use this day to make a plan to quit once and for all.

Quitting isn't easy, but the American Cancer Society is providing some helpful resources and support that will increase your chances of giving up the bad habit.

To find out more about these resources you can call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 or visit their website at http://www.cancer.org/Healthy/StayAwayfromTobacco/GreatAmericanSmokeout/index

Some foods may also help fight the urge to smoke. Milk, water, fruits and vegetables are on the list. When the urge comes to smoke, turn to crunchy foods like carrots and celery to keep you occupied.

You may want to avoid alcohol, caffeine and meats because they can enhance the taste of cigarettes.
