Local communities and organizations holding 9/11 memorials and events

(WXYZ) - A number of 9/11 memorial and remembrance events will be held in the Detroit area today.

Below is a list highlighting some of the events that will take place:

*Michigan Remembers 9-11 will hold a September 11th 5k walk/run on Belle Isle.

*Oakland County Parks and Recreation is offering free park entry to all guests at the following parks:

  • Addison Oaks County Park, 1480 West Romeo Road in Leonard
  • Highland Oaks, 6555 Milford Road in Highland
  • Independence Oaks, 9501 Sashabaw Road in Clarkston,
  • Lyon Oaks, 52221 Pontiac Trail in Wixom
  • Orion Oaks, 2301 Clarkston Road in Lake Orion
  • Red Oaks Dog Park 31353 Dequindre Madison Heights
  • Rose Oaks, 10400 Fish Lake Road in Holly

*Ann Arbor Fire and Police Service will hold a special commemoration in front of First Station One and the Justice Center building from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m.

*Port Huron will hold a special Service of Remembrance at 9:00 a.m. at the International Flag Plaza on Thomas Edison Parkway.

*Immanuel Lutheran Church in Macomb will host World Trade Center survivor Jerry Molnar for a special presentation in the Worship Center where he will tell his story and how his faith has helped him and his community.

*Krav Maga Detroit will be holding a Memorial and fundraiser to benefit Operation Homefront Michigan featuring Major General Richard Stone. The event is being held at 950 W. Maple Road.

*Zaman International will be holding their 2nd Annual Walk 4 Humanity on Saturday, September 10 at Camp Dearborn. Check in and Registration began at 10:00 am and the walk begins at 11:00.

*The Detroit Zoo and Kroger are hosting Michigan First Responders with free admission to them and a guest. The day will include a Ceremony of Remembrance at 10:30 a.m. in the Main Picnic Grove.

*Westland is hosting a 9/11 Memorial Service at City Hall at 11:00 a.m.

*Birmingham is hosting a September 11 Remembrance and Memorial Dedication during which a steel remnant from the World Trade Center will be unveiled and dedicated as part of a memorial.

*Oakland County will honor 9/11 victims with a remembrance ceremony on the south side of the Oakland County Courthouse at 2:00 p.m. Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson and Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard will host the ceremonies. Bouchard will then host a ceremony at the Michigan Fallen heroes Memorial at 3:00 p.m.

*Eastern Michigan University will host a memorial event at 2:30 p.m. at the university's new 9/11 memorial in Pease Park.

*Huron-Clinton Metroparks will hold a tribute culminating with the launching of sky lanterns at Metro Beach and Lake Erie Metroparks at 9:11 p.m. Ceremonies begin at 5:00 p.m. Art Van Furniture and the Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers are selling the memorial floating sky lanterns for $5 each in partnership with CBS Radio Detroit. All proceeds will benefit The Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Services. They are on sale at all 39 Metro Detroit Chevy Dealers and 18 Art Van Furniture stores.

*The city of Dearborn, the Dearborn Area Ministerial Association and The Henry Ford will hold a Remembrance & Unity candlelight vigil at 6:20 p.m. on the front lawn of Henry Ford Museum. Michigan Governor Rick Snyder will be part of the event.
