"The 313 Project" is a local non-profit organization in the running to win $25,000! Home Depot selected the group for its support of local veterans.
"Little by little, event by event, we can change this community," says Aisa Villarosa Berg, one of the non-profit's founders.
Berg and two friends started "The 313 Project" as a student group at Wayne State University's law school. It became a non-profit last year. Their mission is to serve Detroit by providing free legal aid, community service and educational resources.
"We wanted to get our hands dirty. We've painted murals, done urban gardens and held clean-up days," says Berg.
The group has also held free legal clinics, but now the group's mission to make a difference could get a huge boost if it wins Home Depot's Aprons in Action Facebook contest.
All four finalists from across the country have shown they support veterans.
The group that gets the most votes on Facebook wins $25,000 to help fund an organizational or community improvement project.
"We were selected based on work at Romanowski Park which was named in memory of veterans in southwest Detroit killed during World War I and World War II," says Berg.
With the help of hundreds of volunteers and other organizations, "The 313 Project" transformed the park and the community. They installed 50 garbage cans, built picnic tables from scratch and fixed up a playground which was almost burned to the ground.
Karar Alshaibani volunteered for that project.
"The park used to be dirty. They cleaned it up. The very next day, families came here to barbecue. Didn't see that in a long time," says Alshaibani.
Berg and the other co-founders of "The 313 Project" are all lawyers now and they're practicing in public interest law.
Winning $25,000 would help them open a legal clinic in Detroit to serve underrepresented groups including veterans and their families.
"You just need to vote for "The 313 Project". It's the only Detroit based project. We would love everyone's vote!
With a simple click, you can help us achieve our mission," says Berg.
Voting started on January 1st and continues through the end of the month. You can vote as many times as you'd like. Just go to https://www.facebook.com/homedepotfoundation/app_380232235347479
The winner not only gets the $25,000 prize, but also qualifies to win $250,000 in May from The Home Depot Foundation.
