The deputy who was killed during a pursuit on Thanksgiving Day morning has been identified as 50-year-old Eric Overall.

He was recently married and a father.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office says Overall was a 22-year veteran of the department.

The suspect who started the chase is a 22-year-old man from Macomb Township, according to the sheriff's office. He reportedly has four prior convictions for possession of marijuana and one conviction for resisting and obstructing police.

Deputies say it is believed that the suspect "deliberately ran down" the deputy. Overall was reportedly off of the road when he was hit.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Overall's family during this difficult time. You can donate here.

The Lapeer County Sheriff's Office released a statement regarding the pursuit that left one Oakland County Sheriff's deputy dead.

Full statement:

On this date at approximately midnight, Lapeer County Sheriffs Office was involved in a pursuit with a vehicle that started in the parking lot of the County Jail. Traffic was minimal and the pursuit was at moderate speeds. The actions and threats made by the suspect, prior to the pursuit, posed an imminent threat to the public. This pursuit continued on westbound I-69 to Southbound M-15. An Oakland County deputy was deploying “stop sticks” at the intersection of Southbound M-15 and Seymour Lake Road when the fleeing suspect struck the Deputy.

The Oakland County Special Investigations Unit is investigating this tragic incident and Lapeer County Sheriff’s Office is working closely with the Investigations Unit and their investigation.

Lapeer County Sheriffs Office thoughts and prayers go out the family and friends of this fine Deputy along with the entire Oakland County Sheriffs Office.

This investigation is on-going and further will be released when available.

M-15 is now open following a pursuit that ended in the death of an Oakland County Sheriff's deputy.

6:47 a.m.

An Oakland County Sheriff's deputy was hit and killed during an early morning police pursuit, the sheriff's office confirms.

The chase reportedly started in Lapeer County and continued west on I-69 to southbound M-15 and then entered Oakland County into Brandon Township.

Officials say M-15 is closed from Oakhill Road to Long Lake Drive and Seymour Lake Road is closed for half a mile from M-15 to Hadley for the investigation.

The Oakland County Sheriff's Office says the deputy was just assisting when he was killed.

Around 12:30 a.m., the deputy was reportedly about to deploy "stop sticks" outside his patrol car at the intersection of M-15 and Seymour Lake Road to deflate the tires on the suspect's vehicle. The sheriff's office says that's when the suspect ran over the deputy.

The suspect's vehicle rolled over and the man, reportedly in his 20s, was taken into custody at the scene.

The deputy was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. We're told he is a 22-year veteran of the Oakland County Sheriff's Office. His identity is not being released at this time, but we're told he was married and had a child.

"Here we have Thanksgiving Day and a family that will never be the same," said Sheriff Michael Bouchard.

Bouchard said he was very beloved and many visited at the hospital early this morning.

"He did a lot of good -- not just in the community, but for family and friends," said Bouchard.
