Study links childhood ADHD to adult obesity

(WXYZ) - A new study from New York University finds boys with ADHD are more likely to become obese adults.

Researchers followed 200 boys through adulthood and found those who had ADHD as children were twice as likely to have higher BMI and obesity rates as adults than those who didn't have ADHD.

On average, men who had ADHD as children were 19 pounds heavier than men who didn't have ADHD.

Results of the study were published Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

Researchers believe the link may be due characteristics that are associated with ADHD, such as lack of impulse control and poor planning skills.

Experts say this study should encourage parents to help their children get plenty of exercise and develop healthy eating habits.
