Scores of people are lacing up their running shoes this morning to fight cancer in the Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure®.

The 2016 Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure®, is presented by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. The race will celebrate its 25th anniversary as one of the most inspirational events to help end breast cancer.  It's happening Saturday, May 21st at Chene Park in Detroit. This year's 5K Race Route will take both runners and walkers down East Jefferson and return via the beautiful RiverWalk.

All paid registrations include a Race packet with 2016 t-shirt and numbered bib which must be worn at the event. Survivors receive an additional pink shirt and a commemorative lapel pin. Pins will be available for sale to others as well. Children ages 5 and under are welcome to participate at no charge but must be officially registered by a parent or guardian.

Breast cancer survivor Katrina Studvent  is the chair of the Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure® and also serves as director of Breast Cancer Special Programs at Karmanos Cancer Institute.

"We have made tremendous progress in the breast cancer fight, thanks to the incredible commitment of Susan G. Komen; and the smart and gifted researchers and physicians at the Karmanos Cancer Institute, Wayne State University and other organizations around the globe," says Studvent. "Today, there are more than three million breast cancer survivors in the United States, including an estimated 155,000 with metastatic disease - the 'forever fighters' who are constantly in treatment.'"

Studvent also says: "We have come a long way but our work is far from over. Our latest needs assessment on our Detroit service area representing Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties showed a significantly higher incidence of late-stage diagnoses and deaths from breast cancer compared to the rest of Michigan. Supporting our annual Komen Detroit Race will help close the gap on these disparities. We hope we can count on everyone's support."

Organizers say the Race will include welcomed traditions and new surprises:

The 2016 Komen Detroit Race will continue many of its wonderful traditions including the Children's Area, vendor giveaways, Survivor Trolley, Survivor Café, dancing on the Pink Carpet, Opening and Closing Ceremonies, bands along the Race Route and so much more. The 2016 Race will also have an exciting new Race Route, showcasing the beauty and resurgence of Detroit's RiverWalk, along with other new surprises.
