Toyota agrees to $1B+ settlement in uncontrolled acceleration case

(WXYZ) - Toyota has agreed to a settlement of more than $1 billion in response to a class action lawsuit involving vehicles that accelerated out of their drivers control.

The settlement is estimated at between $1.2 and $1.4. Around 19 million current and former Toyota, Lexus and Scion owners are expected to receive notification of the settlement.

An attorney for the plaintiffs in the case told the Associated Press that it is the largest settlement in US history involving automobile defects.

The vehicles involved in the settlement are Toyota, Lexus and Scion models from  between 1998 and 2010. A complete list is included as part of the settlement document posted online .

The court hearing the case will review the settlement sometime this week. It is expected to be approved sometime within the next few months.

Vehicle owners should not contact Toyota at this time.

Toyota has recalled more than 14 million vehicles worldwide in relation to the case. Drivers have said their vehicles would suddenly accelerate to high speed and they could not stop them.

Toyota had blamed driver error, faulty floor mats and sticky accelerator pedals for the acceleration problem.
