JCPenney to get rid of checkout counters

(WXYZ) - JCPenney is rolling out a new plan to help out its struggling business.

The retailer wants to get rid of traditional checkout counters.

JCPenney CEO Ron Johnson says the department store will eliminate cash registers and the employees who stand behind them.

Instead, the department store chain will push the mobile checkouts and self-checkouts, similar to those found in many grocery stores.

Johnson says he hopes to phase out checkout counters by 2014.

JCPenney will also replace traditional bar code price tags with RFID (radio frequency identification) chips.

The retailer says the moves are part of an effort to return the company to profitability.
