Officials share blight survey, recommendations to deal with abandoned structures

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Blight is so much more than an eyesore it's a cancer, holding back Detroit’s recovery.

For the first time, a comprehensive plan has been put together to eliminate blight in every Detroit neighborhood.

Members of the Detroit Blight Removal Task Force unveiled the plan at Focus: HOPE a short time ago. This all came together when area business leaders met with members of the Obama administration in 2013.

Local businessman Dan Gilbert pushed the group to address Detroit’s extensive blight problem. He believed if you didn't clean up Detroit’s neighborhoods, you couldn't move the city forward.

One of the first steps in the plan, called for mapping every single real estate parcels in Detroit and identify the problem areas.
