Be Careful! What's in Your Car Can Hurt You

Last Update: 11/07 10:06 am
LIVONIA, Mich. (WXYZ) - Police in Livonia say be careful about what you place in your car; it could be used by thieves to get into your house.

Stealing garage door openers from cars is one way to break into homes without being seen. Police in Livonia say it has happened four times in the past two weeks--in the parking lot of two theatres and and the parking lot of a fitness club.

Investigators say the suspect or suspects steal the garage door opener, look for vehicle papers for an address, and then make a move.

"You think when you go out for an evening, you're going to find that everything is OK at home when you return," said Terry Bixler, who's out enjoying a movie. "And that just gives us all pause to think about what we leave in our cars and how they (thieves) get information from our cars to be traced back to our homes."

Police say once inside the garage, it's into the house to take TVs, computers, jewelry and cash. Then the garage door is opened, and the bad guys are gone.
