LAS VEGAS (WXYZ) - Monday's World Series of Poker finale was broadcast on ESPN Tuesday night so everyone could enjoy the mastery of Joe Cada, a Shelby Township cardsharp who's beome the youngest poker champ ever, and a millionaire eight times over.
Cada emerged from the field of almost 6,500 to win the $8.55 million top price in the No-Limit Texas Hold 'Em main event early Tuesday morning. During an interview on Action News this Morning, Cada said "It's pretty exciting right now. It hasn't fully hit me yet."
Cada took the title when he went all-in with a pair of nines. He was called by Darvin Moon, a self-employed logger from Maryland, who had a queen and a jack. Two sevens, an eight, a two and a king later, Cada was the champion. He gave his opponent a lot of credit, saying "Darvin played a great heads-up match and put me in a lot of tough spots."
Cada says he doesn't yet know what he's going to do with the money. "I might splurge a little bit, but I haven't really thought of it yet. I'll try to take it one step at a time and not overlook the march. I guess I'm gonna have to sit down and decide what I want to do with it all."
Cada's victory comes just one year after Denmark's Peter Eastgate won the event. He was 22-years-old at the time of his win.
