Fishing Tragedy: Two Men Drown in Lake

Last Update: 11/10/2009 11:52 pm
VAN BUREN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) - Divers recovered the bodies of two men who drowned after their fishing boat sank on Belleville Lake.

Fred Lewis Jr. and William Mcrae, both from Detroit, drowned in the lake around 11:00 a.m.

Nathaniel Deck, 66 from Redford was also in the fishing boat, but was able to make it to shore.

None of the three men were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident.

The man who survived told investigators that the boat began to sink about 25 yards from shore.

Neighbors heard a call for help in the distance and called for help.

Investigators now believe there was too much weight on the 12-foot aluminum fishing boat. The boat had a 350 pound limit, just one of the men alone weighed over 300 lbs.
