DETROIT (WXYZ) - A mother of a five-month-old baby was gunned down last weekend when gang members fire into a crowd. On Monday the accused killers went before a judge, while the victim's family held a fundraiser for the funeral.
Police say the suspects they're holding at the Wayne County Jail are gang members accused of firing shots into a crowd, killing at random.
A big crowd was on hand Monday night at a fundraiser in southwest Detroit. Friends and family of Alyssa Wingle banding together to raise money to pay for her burial. The 19-year-old mother of a five-month-old baby was killed outside a banquet hall at Waterman and Lafayette Friday night.
Wingle's cousin says the reality of what happened last weekend has not yet set in.
"I've known her since the day she was born," said Gamet Elswood, Alyssa's cousin. "She's a beautiful kid, and as she got older, the more beautiful and family-oriented she was."
Police say Wingle was the innocent victim of gang violence. Investigators believe suspects Don Harris, Raymond Davis and his brother Christopher Davis were all involved in the murder. Officers say the three suspects tried crashing the party at the banquet hall, were kicked out, then came back and started shooting into the crowd.
Alyssa's brother was also hit, but he's expected to recover. Many in the community are giving Detroit Police a lot of credit for tracking down the suspects so quickly.
