DETROIT (WXYZ) - Two key issues on the ballot, Proposal D and Proposal S, was approved by Detroit voters.
Proposal D passed by a 72% to 28% margin. The proposal recommends a change to the way city council is elected. It calls for an amendment to the City Charter so that seven of the council members would be elected from different districts across the city. The remaining two members would be elected on an at-large basis.
The resolution is non-binding because the charter commission would have the final word on what is actually written in the city charter. However, experts say, passing the proposal would send a strong message to the charter commission.
Proposal S was voted in by a 62% to 38% margin. It is a $500 million bond issue that will provide federal stimulus funds for the construction of eight new schools and the remodeling of 10 existing schools.
