WILSON: Pay-To-Play TV? Part II

One of Detroit’s best known media personalities, Mildred Gaddis, has railed against the “pay-to-play” approach that’s already corrupted city government. But has she been caught using the same tactic herself? It's the subject of Steve Wilson's latest report.

Question for Rockysdad. What do you mean by YOU PEOPLE?

Motordoll - 7/5/2009 8:36 PM
Alright people: #1 Quiet as it's kept, "pay for play" started long before Gaddis, Darcell and Mason. #2 Liz6Mtc - Like I said above there has always been crooks, we just didn't have a Steve Wilson to dig up the dirt. And has it ever occurred to you, if there was one (a Steve), those old crooks, with their old money probably paid the investigative reporter(s) to keep there mouth(s) shut. You know how that old "network" operated. #3 Streetwiseguy - Why are you upset with Washington? She only did what politicians do and that is spill the beans on the opponents. Yes Gaddis got caught in the middle, but if she wasn't doing wrong, there wouldn't be anything to tell. Mildred is a smart cookie and she is old enough to know she is being watched (Steetwiseguy you know exactly what I'm talking about.) So, if she decided to take that chance, then it's Mildred you should be disappointed with not Washington. #4 Clare - Has anybody every told you when you use the word all in reference to vast group of people in a city, it makes your statement false? Please don't do that, it make you sound foolish.

Mildred, isn't the only negro that was busted by her own calling a someone from another race to thake us a step backwards. Look at your elected Politicians who is abusing our tax dollars everyday. No one is crying about that, due to the fact that most likely anyone who is trying to get in office to cheat as well. I feel sorry for Mildred the way she was taken down by a jealous Black Sister. You mean to tell me that if I paid or had sponsors paying $1200 for my radio spot I can't change people who are willing to spend their campaign money on my radio show? Mildred you are one tough Sisiter, but you let a unknown take you down by using Steve Wilson? Oh Well.

Rain E Day: If you were interested in finding out who the candidates are you would. You are on here shooting off your mouth when you could be checking the candidates out. Mildred Gaddis was wrong in what she did. MG let greed get in her way and she has to pay for it. As for Bing he could buy all the time he wanted with her and then some.

StreetWiseGuy - 7/4/2009 7:24 PM
Its a shame that Karinda Washington is a wannabe who did not have the money to pay for airtime. However she took upon herself to pull this stunt to get known, but I do know that when someone is paying for their own airtime they do have the rights to charge, and I would not call it a game when paying a Publicity fee to get elected. What is the crime that Mildred Gaddis committed?, and to me I would not elect for a jealous blabber mouth to serve on the City Council.

In response to “Rain E Day” who posted here at 10:27 am: First, I did NOT say on Mildred’s radio show (or anywhere else) that I did not find her to unethical. In fact, if you look at the script, you’ll see I was pretty clear—it was not only against the law but “what ethical journalists does that,” I asked her. As for tapping her on the shoulder to warn her…that’s not my job. I AM an ethical journalist and my job is to report to the public the facts I learn, not slip a warning to someone doing wrong so they can see the error of their ways, not to mention they’re about to be exposed. Hey, I could have tapped Kwame on the shoulder, too, why not? Also, this was not wrongdoing that “was about to take place,” viewers were already being deceived each week. Two episodes had already aired, a third was coming up in two days. Yes, Mildred WAS bring the candidates to the forefront—but only her favorites, or the one who would pay her $1,000 she never disclosed. I hear you about doing more but there are more than 200 candidates in the various races. How in the world could ANY station do justice to all 200 of them…and selecting a few as Mildred was doing is flat wrong, I hope we can agree. Conspiracy? Your question is so jumbled I can’t quite understand what you’re accusing us of. Removing what forum? “If you’re going to help us then leave us alone!” you write. Huh?

Rain E Day - 7/4/2009 10:37 AM
(correction) Channel 7, if you're NOT going to help us, then leave us alone!

Rain E Day - 7/4/2009 10:27 AM
I listened to the Mildred Gaddis Show on the radio the morning of Steve Wilson's investigative report. And on her show Steve even acknowledged that he did not find Ms Gaddis to be unethical and an honorable journalist. I think if he truly felt that way, then he could have tapped her on the shoulder and warned her that an inapropiate activity was about to take place(entrapment). But moving on, almost every blogger here agrees that the citizens of Detroit are making uneducated votes and voting on name recognition. Tell me- who is providing in formation about the candidates? True, there is a link at the end of Steves story, But it's small and if don't read it you won't see it. At least Mildred is bringing the candidates to the forefront so the citizens can make a more informed decision before casting a vote. Channel 7 (or any of the other station for that matter)isn't providing any information on the candidates on any regular of predictable basis. We citizens don't have a lot of time before the election. And in order to make good voting decisions, we need information. Once we get the info, we need time study that info. Steve if you're going going to knock of your media competition off then then replace the forum for which you removed. We are not as ignorant as you may think, but its hard to fight when our hands are tied (as you have done to us) and you remove one of the only forums for us to make better choices. I guess I would be wrong to start thinking conspiricy,eh? Channel 7, since you allowed Steve to remove one of our sources of information, you should pick it up from here, especially if you're on our side. Otherwise, don't critisize us for the decisions we've made. We can only vote on the information that's at our disposal. So now what? Why don't you put that little link (voteMI) on your front page as one of the running tickers instead of that financial crap you've been running for the last year or so? If you're going to help us, then leave us alone!

Just to be clear I hope news agency investigate government wrong doings but with Ms. Gaddis wasn't there another side? Why not find out how many times Mr. Bing was on show and how much he paid for the on air time? If he did pay was it disclosed as a campaign expense or was it out of pocket cost and if so was he bribing Ms. Gaddis for air time? Just a thought. Steve I'm from Oakland county and I seem to remember Mr. Patterson leaving his car (government owned) stuck on some county property and just walking off where was the investigation? Tell me Mr. Patterson doesn't have a few skeletons in his closet why not take down the King of Oakland county? Just to be clear I'm a very strong conservative and vote Republican or Libertarian but as evidence we do wrong look at Mr. Sanford down in S.Carolina. Mr. Sanford's crime isn't cheating on his wife his crime is not turning power over when leaving the state. Why not go hard after Levin or Conyers? Someone in power that long isn't clean no way no how. It's easy to attack these officials in Detroit because they are careless in their dealing but why not go after the big fish too?

Crunyon - 7/4/2009 8:43 AM
O'k Ms. Gaddis violated FCC rules and should pay a fine for her miss deeds but isn't it time we investigate Mr. Wilson? Ms. Gaddis isn't an elected official so as far as I'm concerned she was making a little extra money. Steve has a few skeletons I will bet on it and if someone found a few I'm sure WADL would gladly pay for that info!! So get to work
