15 Oxford High School football players diagnosed with Impetigo

OXFORD, Mich. (WXYZ) - Oxford School District has confirmed that 15 Junior Varsity football players who attend Oxford High School have been diagnosed with Impetigo.

Impetigo is a staph infection that is contagious and is transmitted from skin-to-skin contact or from sharing equipment.

Jenny Matteson, Commuication Coordinator for Oxford School District, released the following statement:

"Impetigo has been diagnosed in 15 of our JV football players. Due to this diagnosis received by a doctor, all the various locker rooms and training rooms were sanitized immediately .The players were also instructed to take their personal items home, clean them and bring them back. Those players that were diagnosed , a doctors note was required from each of them before they were allowed to participate in today's practice."

The school district released the following information on Impetigo:

Impetigo is a form of a staph infection. The skin serves as the major barrier to protect us from infections. When that barrier breaks down, as in cuts or abrasions, we are subject to a number of viruses and bacteria, including Impetigo. Impetigo can be transmitted by skin to skin contact with someone carrying a staph infection, contact with surfaces possessing staph, or through sharing equipment or clothing.

Signs and symptoms of Impetigo…

Impetigo initially presents as small red papules similar to insect bites. These lesions rapidly evolve to small blisters and then to pustules that finally scab over with a characteristic honey-colored crust.

Prevention of Impetigo…

  • Frequently wash hands with liquid anti-bacterial soap or alcohol based hand sanitizer.
  • Proper wound care is essential.  If you or your teammates have an open wound (scrape, cut, burn), be certain it is cleaned and bandaged.
  • Do not share equipment, clothing, and towels.  Keep personal items personal, as Impetigo is often spread through direct contact.
  • Shower with soap and water after playing sports and regularly clean your personal equipment, clothing and even your gym bag.

As a further precaution, all lockers in the boys varsity locker room are to be cleared, with locks removed by 10 p.m. Tuesday, 9/24/2013 for the purpose of interior locker cleaning. Items may be returned and locked by Wednesday (9/25/2013) morning.
