Wayne County is arranging grief counselors for their employees after one of them was killed in a horrific crash that involved two road workers being hit by the County road vehicle that was supposed to keep them safe.

David Wolf, 47, and another road worker were out on foot, patching potholes with one County vehicle in front of them and another vehicle behind them to protect the two of them from passing vehicles.

But surveillance video from a nearby tire shop shows the vehicle in the rear failing to stop as Wolf and the other worker were scooping more coal patch out of the rear of the truck in front of them.

Wolf was crushed and left with critical injuries on the scene. The other worker was struck but able to stagger away.

"It was the most horrifying thing I've ever seen in my life," said tire shop worker Wally Carroll who witnessed the crash.

It happened around 10:30 am. Thursday on Van Born near Beech Daly.

Wolf and his coworker were rushed to Beaumont Hospital in Dearborn where Wolf was pronounced dead.

His 46-year-old coworker is being evaluated for injuries to his legs.

The 48-year-old driver who appears to be at fault was interviewed late Thursday afternoon by Taylor Police. That driver was later released pending a review of the case by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.
