PONTIAC, Mich. (WXYZ) - Deputies from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office are warning parents to lock up their guns after a 3-year-old from Pontiac accidentally shot himself with his father's firearm.
The boy was playing in his parent's bedroom when he found the handgun and accidentally shot himself in the mouth, according to the sheriff's office.
The gun was in a holster under the bed. The father told the deputies the gun is usually locked and so is the bedroom door, but they were moving some things around in the house and left the door unlocked and the gun was unlocked.
The dad did have a permit for the 40 caliber Glock, but he could lose that now and face charges of neglect. It will be up to the prosecutor to decide.
The child was rushed to St. Joseph Hospital first and then transferred to Royal Oak Beaumont where he is listed in fair condition. He does have injuries to his mouth and face, and he lost some teeth, but it is expected he will recover.
Captain Mike Johnson with the Oakland County Sheriff's department tells us the family is devastated and cooperating with authorities.
Neighbors who saw police at the house say they worried and wondered what happened. They say it is a blessing the little boy is alive.
Investigators are urging everyone with a weapon to keep it locked.
