DETROIT (WXYZ) - Detroit Police say a 49-year-old man is in custody after turning himself in Wednesday in connection with the fatal hit-and-run of an 8-year-old.
The man turned himself in at around 9:30 am Wednesday. Police say the man has given a full confession. The case is being turned over to the Wayne County Prosecutors office for review.
Darrin Wilhite, known to many as D.J., was killed near West Chicago Street and Abington in Detroit at around 7:00 pm Tuesday night..
Police said he was riding his bike when he was hit by the driver of a red SUV. The vehicle dragged Wilhite's black and white bike almost a half a mile up the street before it came loose from the front of the vehicle.
Detroit Police impounded the vehicle late Tuesday night on the 7000 block of Patton. That location is about three and a half miles away from the scene of the hit-and-run. And police say the vehicle was abandoned on the street.
Wilhite was playing at a friend's home and was riding his bike back to his house, which is only two blocks away. The friends were watching him as he rode back, so they saw everything. They spoke to 7 Action News with the permission of their father because they want to help catch who killed their friend.
"I saw it coming by that building down there," said 10-year-old Aquitnae McKinley as she described the vehicle that hit her friend. "And, it was speeding up the street," she said.
When we asked her brother if the vehicle looked like it was slowing down he said no.
"It just kept going. And it hit him," said 9-year-old Otis McKinley.
"It was red and black and it had black under it and some black windows," said Aquitnae. She ran back into the house to get help.
Wilhite later died at Sinai-Grace Hospital.
