81-year-old Detroit woman without water for two weeks because of a broken water main pipe

DETROIT, Mich. (WXYZ) - Two weeks have gone by since an 81-year-old in Wayne County has had water running at her home.

The 81-year-old scooped snow out of a trash can that she collected from outside to flush her toilet.

“I feel as though I’ve been in a third world country.  I feel that I’ve been in an earthquake torn country,” said Gloria Johnson.

Gloria does not live in a third world country.  She lives in Detroit.

“I’m 81 and I’ve had to do all of this, drag this snow in out of the backyards and up the steps and make water,” said Gloria.

Gloria has been living without water since the end of January when a water main broke on her street.  The whole street had their water restored within a few days.  Gloria has been waiting two weeks.

“I just feel that it’s uncalled for and that’s why I’m so disgusted,” said Gloria.

She said crews from the city have been out, which is evident from the looks of her yard, but the problem never gets fixed.  She put up these signs in her front yard yesterday--‘Detroit Fix the Water’ and ‘No Water Since Jan’.

“That’s why I put my signs out there because I wasn’t getting any results, and I just thought somebody just needed to know what was going on,” said Gloria.

When I called the Detroit Water and Sewage Department, a spokesperson told me crews were at the house today.  They believe Gloria’s pipes froze.  I was told another crew would be back out first thing in the morning.

“I’ll wait and see, but I’m still disgusted and dissatisfied,” said Gloria.

The water department assures me they will get Gloria’s water running tomorrow, and 7 Action News will make sure they keep their promise.
