9-year-old Jayvon Felton who served as Detroit Police Chief for a day loses battle against Leukemia

(WXYZ) - 7 Action News has learned that the 9-year-old boy who was named honorary Detroit Police Chief for a day has passed away.

We're told Jayvon Felton died this evening at Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit.

The 9-year-old boy was diagnosed with leukemia last April. Felton, who was a big fan of the Detroit Police Department, said he always wanted to be an officer when he grew up.

In January, Detroit Police Chief James Craig swore Felton in as honorary chief for the day.

Jayvon's supporters hoped the special day, which was brought together through several donations, would lift his spirits.

"He's one of us, he will be remembered as such," said Chief Craig after learning of Jayvon's passing. "Jayvon truly is a special part of the DPD family."
