(WXYZ) - A 16-year-old girl was killed in a violent accident that shut down Michigan Avenue near the Southfield Freeway in Dearborn. Two other female passengers from her car are in critical condition and another passenger is listed in fair at Oakwood Hospital.
Police said that at 3:20 p.m. a SMART bus struck a Ford Escort from behind while the car was stopped at a traffic light on Michigan Avenue near American Drive.
The Escort then hit a pickup truck that was also stopped at the traffic light. The pickup truck landed several feet away in the bushes and trees in the median.
The male driver of the pickup truck was transported to the hospital and later released, he suffered minor injuries.
16-year-old Destiny Henderson was the driver of the Escort who died. Her mother tells 7 Action News she was turning 17 in one week and she was a junior at Inkster High School. Destiny had just gotten her driver's license a few weeks ago so she could get to and from her new job. Her mother Nakeshia Pierce said she was getting together a gift basket to surprise her daughter at school for her birthday and they were talking about what to wear for her senior pictures.
The ages of the three other females in the car have not been released yet.
Inkster High School officials say grief counselors will be at the school on Tuesday to help students and faculty.
Police said neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be a factor in the accident.
Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad said this incident is a terrible tragedy and it will be investigated to the fullest.
The Dearborn Police Department expresses its sympathies for all those involved.
A spokesperson for SMART said they cannot comment until after the investigation is complete.
